Description
Gambel's Quail are one of the most commonly seen icons of the southwest desert region of Arizona, including the Phoenix and Tucson area. Their rust colored "hat" outlined in white and topped off with one distinct black feather are the most recognized features of the male quail. This lone bird is perched on a rock right next to a large saguaro cactus with many other desert plants in the background. The orange Globe Mallow is in full bloom here tucked in among the other bushes. The quail families love to scurry around underneath all of these various plants to find food and also for protection from predators. These delightful birds can be seen in most neighborhoods that have desert landscapes and they can become very friendly when fed birdseed or bread crumbs!
