Description
This Prismacolor drawing began as a single male cardinal
on the branch of this little pine tree.
I made Christmas cards from that image.
Later, I decided he looked very lonely, so I added his female partner.
The cardinal is nonmigratory, so they apparently do not mind the
snowy atmosphere depicted here in this scene.
Cardinals have a very distinctive song, which is a loud whistling sound
with several variations.
They inhabit woodlands, swamps, streamside thickets
as well suburban gardens.
Cardinals are found in several areas of the Southwest, including Arizona.
The female cardinal resembles the Pyrrhuloxia
which can be found in the lower southern and western states
as well as Mexico.
They are distinguishable from the Pyrrhuloxia by the
difference in their beaks along with variations
in their feather coloring.
