Description
The Santa Rita Prickly Pear Cactus painting is number nine in my blooming cactus series in watercolors. All of the paintings are in a square format and would make a wonderful Southwest artwork arrangement on any wall.
All of the cacti and blooms in this series can be found in the desert regions of Arizona and other areas of the Southwest.
There are several varieties of cactus that fit into the prickly pear category. The Santa Rita species is so unique due to the wide range of colors on one plant. The pads may be all the way from a greenish hue with a purple tinge on the edges of the pads during the monsoon season. The entire pad will turn purple during stressful times of drought or extreme cold weather.
The lemon yellow flowers of the cactus appear along the top edges of the spiny pads and are most prevalent during the spring season of April through June.
The lavender or purple pads are easily recognized among all the other desert cactus plants that are normally in shades of green.
