Description
Pincushion Cactus is number 11 in my series of watercolor paintings of cactus blooms from the Sonoran Desert Southwest area in Arizona.
Please take a look at the other ten paintings in the series and watch for more new blossoms in the future! I am concentrating on the cactus flower itself, rather than the plant they grow on. The paintings are in a square format.
There are many varieties in the Pincushion or Escobaria cactus family. I chose to give this painting a very dark background to show off the sparkly spines in the sunlight. This variety grows very low to the ground and is often overlooked as it hides under other desert plants. Pincushions come in a long list of colors and shapes. Mainly the flowers bloom around the top area, sometimes in a very precise circle. The flowers can be cream to yellow, to coral and pink. A few species have dark red blooms.
