Cereus Business #2
Artist
Marilyn Smith
Medium
Painting - Acrylic On Canvas
Description
This large acrylic painting on canvas shows a macro view of the cereus nightblooming cactus also known as the cereus Peruvianus or apple cactus because of the round red fruit it produces after the beautiful blooms fade. Birds and other wildlife are attracted to the juicy, sweet fruit.
The nightbloomers are only open during one 24-hour period before fading and dropping off to the desert floor. They are pollinated largely by bats in the area as well as moths and bees.
The flowers usually appear up and down the ribbed column of the tall cactus plants. There are several varieties of cereus plants, many which are native to South America but thrive in the desert regions of the Southwest, such as Arizona.
