Description
"Ma! He's teasing me!" Brother Javelina stole the prickly pear fruit from his crying sister. Typical family situation.
This painting was just a whimsical idea that developed as I was planning to paint the baby Javelina family. 'Keep Away' was a common game among all siblings and it just seemed to fit into this Arizona desert scene. Momma Javelina is only a few feet away but I chose to try keeping her in the shadows making the viewer aware of her subtle presence.
A favorite food item for the Javelina, or Collared Peccary, is the ripe fruit the falls from the prickly pear cactus after the blooms die. They are a very tasty treat for many of the desert animals of the Southwest regions around the Tucson and Phoenix area. Among the bushes and background plants you can find in the desert is the stately saguaro cactus. A hint of a brittle bush was created using salt sprinkles in the damp watercolor paint, creating a star burst of flowers.
