Description
This watercolor painting of a pintail duck decoy was created by Marilyn Smith.
My fascination for the beauty of decoys goes back a long time.
I used to purchase the bare wooden carvings and then paint them,
resembling various species of ducks, such as the pintail, wood ducks,
redheads, mallards and others. Most of them became gifts to family
and friends. Later, my interest changed to painting watercolors of the decoys in a variety of settings. This pintail is resting on the work bench of its' owner after
a day of hunting. The anchor and the rope are just draped over and nearby, waiting for another day of hunting. The old shed is very weathered and the window, though rather dirty and full of spider webs, still glistens in the sun.

Duck decoys originated in the early days of America and were used by the American Indians to lure waterfowl in for hunting purposes for their food
supply. The Indians made the earliest decoys from stuffed skins and painted bulrushes shaped into bird-like forms.
The early settlers to America quickly learned this method to aid in their survival as well. The method of this craft improved over the years and gradually
evolved from the crude form into a wooden carved piece that became part of the original American Folk Art.
Collectors of these decoys were limited until recent years.
They have become very popular and sought-after collectibles by many people.
Decoys that that still possess their original paint and are in good condition are considered very valuable and can sell for thousands of dollars.
The decoys of today have become appealing to collectors as art objects
due to the intricate carving and artistic painting details that many carvers
create.

Just gorgeous artwork Marilyn; I love the detail that you put into your work...here, the sunbeam shining into the window through the spiders web, the little lady bug on the sill, the lovely grain in the wood, the nails....you got it all.....and the beautiful duck decoy, the nets....all combined to collectively bring this wonderful artwork to life...such an amazing talent!!! jd
