Description
This watercolor painting of a ruddy duck decoy was created by Marilyn Smith.
My fascination for the beauty of decoys goes back a long time.
I used to purchase the bare wooden carvings and then paint them,
resembling various species of ducks, such as the pintail, wood ducks,
redheads, mallards and others. Most of them became gifts to family
and friends. Later, my interest changed to painting watercolors of the decoys in a variety of settings. This ruddy duck is resting on a stack of books near a bright, sunny window, perhaps in the library of an old house.
It is being used more as a piece of art on display rather than for hunting purposes. The owner has quite the collection of books pertaining to duck hunting, decoy carving, and art related subjects.
**************
Duck decoys originated in the early days of America and were used by the American Indians to lure waterfowl in for hunting purposes for their food
supply. The Indians made the earliest decoys from stuffed skins and painted bulrushes shaped into bird-like forms.
The early settlers to America quickly learned this method to aid in their survival as well. The method of this craft improved over the years and gradually
evolved from the crude form into a wooden carved piece that became part of the original American Folk Art.
Collectors of these decoys were limited until recent years.
They have become very popular and sought-after collectibles by many people.
Decoys that that still possess their original paint and are in good condition are considered very valuable and can sell for thousands of dollars.
The decoys of today have become appealing to collectors as art objects
due to the intricate carving and artistic painting details that many carvers
create.

I do have a book on Blurb titled "Art From My World" and I wasn't thinking when I did this painting. I should have put that in here! :)
