Description
One of the world's natural wonders is the White Sands National Monument located between Alamogordo and Las Cruces, New Mexico. The giant dunes are made up of sparkling white gypsum that covers nearly 300 square miles. This Tularosa Basin in the Chihuahuan Desert is the largest gypsum dune field in the world. Rain and snow in the mountains dissolve gypsum from the rocks and carry it into the Basin where it eventually breaks down into sand-size particles. When they are light enough the wind will move them around and create a rippling sand dune. Snow plows are used to keep the road open in the park and even then, it is hard to keep up with the constantly moving dunes. The picnic areas have to be relocated periodically and the park road has changed in shape and size many times over the years. It had been many years since I had visited this awesome place so I was thrilled to get a few photographs recently underneath unbelievable blue and white skies!
