An early sunrise ride on an old dusty, desert trail can lead cowboys to many surprises along the way. These two cowpokes just passed the early morning blooms on several cactus plants. The Brown-spine Prickly Pear is showing off its' variegated peach into yellow flowers beside the beauty of the Pink-flowered Hedgehog covered in bright fuchsia blooms. Tucked behind it and growing into the old weathered wagon wheel is an Engelmann Prickly Pear that has dropped its' flowers and is producing the deep red fruit that can be made into juice and jams. The last cactus group is the Santa Rita Prickly Pear that turns a delightful shade of purple after a cold winter or a stressful drought season. It is covered in lemon yellow flowers that are a perfect contrast to their purple pads. Old fence posts have remnants of rusty barbed wire left over from past ranching days.
