Description
This watercolor painting by Marilyn Smith is a portrait of the church organist that was playing one Sunday morning at the little chapel at Goldfield Ghost Town which is a tourist destination near Apache Junction, Arizona. While attending church services there, I was struck by the image of the elderly organist as she concentrated so intently on her music. On the organ was a stack of hymnals and one in particular had a certain page marked and ready for her use. I loved the way she had clipped her locks on top of her head with a plain barrette to keep them out of her eyes. It was no doubt difficult to play such an antique organ but the mood was very serene and meaningful. The one last item that gave me a smile was the vase of plastic flowers for ambiance.
Goldfield was an old mining community that is now a great tourist attraction. They not only have the chapel, but many mining buildings along with a jail, gunfights, a restaurant and saloon, a bordello and many gift shops as well.
