Description
Gambel's Quail are one of the most commonly seen icons of the southwest Sonoran desert region of Arizona, including the Phoenix and Tucson area. The rust colored "hat" outlined in white and topped off with one distinct black feather is the most recognized features of the male quail. The female, as portrayed here, is much less colorful as her topknot is very pale. The quail families love to scurry around underneath all of the various plants to find food and also for protection from predators. These delightful birds can be seen in most neighborhoods that have desert landscapes and they can become very friendly when fed birdseed or bread crumbs!
One of my favorite places to observe the quail is the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix. It is so nice to sit on the cafe patio and watch the antics of the quail when they run through the bushes and cacti hoping to get a morsel of food that someone may have dropped while eating. It is quite a contest to see who will win the battle, either the quail or the ground squirrels. The call of quail is something very unique and always recognizable.
I created this Prismacolor pencil drawing of the mother quail and her covey of chicks, only a few days old, to illustrate how rapidly the babies become independent with the ability to fend for themselves by snatching bits of food right out from under their family members! The front runner in this desert scene has found just what he wants to eat and is keeping it for himself. That is, until a brother or sister take it from him!
In the background the viewer can find a soft image of the saguaro cactus as well as the indication of cholla cactus behind the rocks and other plants of the desert.
I also have several other art pieces that include images of the Gambel's quail in my Collection titled Birds.
