Description
This watercolor painting depicts a typical work day in the life of pioneers in the Old West desert areas of Arizona and the southwest. Day is winding down and the ranch women are preparing the evening meal outside on the campfire. A cast iron kettle is filled with stew and a pot of beans is waiting to be hung over the fire to warm. A coffee pot is warming in the coals by the fire. The sun is almost ready to set over the distant purple mountains creating an interesting silhouette of the cowboys returning from their cattle drive. The border collie is herding the cattle into the corral toward the windmill and a much needed drink of water. Long shadows are forming all around this homestead and today's laundry is still on the line. A copper boiler is standing near the fire where an old washboard was used to do laundry. The chickens are pecking at their food scattered in the desert sand. A young boy is tending to the horse team that was hitched to the old wooden buckboard that is filled with supplies. Perhaps he made a trip into the nearest town to pick up the flour and sugar needed for daily use. Soon the cowboys will be gathering at the adobe brick ranch house for their supper and some rest. The laundry will be taken down, the fire put out, the sun will set soon and tomorrow it all begins again.
