Description
I took this roadrunner photograph while visiting the
Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, Arizona.
He was determined to steal bread, crackers, chips or anything
else that he should not eat, from the Gambel's quail that
reside on the hillside in the garden.
The Greater Roadrunner is a large ground-dwelling cuckoo,
nearly 24 inches long.
He speeds across the desert on long, strong legs.
The roadrunner usually lives on insents, lizards, snakes,
rodents and other small birds.
They are very common in scrub desert and mesquite groves.
They have a long, heavy bill, a very conspicuous
bushy crest and a very long, white-edged tail.
I did notice a very brilliant greenish hue on some
of his feathers in the wing area,
especially when the sun struck his body.
I did not, however, hear him say "Meep, meep"
or "beep, beep" as we are used to hearing the cartoons.
He does have a song rather dovelike or cooing and
descending in pitch.
What a treat to see this large character rambling through the
patio cafe area looking for handouts.

These birds are just so difficult to capture! Congratulations on your feature in American Desert Southwest. FL

These little guys are characters. I have only seen one here---and he chose our house---he would be on the roof---and run along the driveway when I was backing the car out---and be on my porch chair when I came back. I for sure missed him when he disappeared. lvf

Wonderful image! Love all the detail in his tail feathers! We saw one once, but it was in a gas station lot, so the shot wasn't very attractive - but we were glad we saw a real one after having watched Wile E Coyote so many times! Love the title! v/f

I was amazed at the green hue that showed up in his feathers! I haven't been that close to one before. They are so shy and move so quickly that it's hard to get a good shot of them.. So, thanks for your nice comments!

Marilyn, I just love your beautiful artworks, but it is almost getting to the point where I love your humor, even more than mine! Now that is a compliment! This was a very "Wiley" capture of this "Roadrunner" and loved the title, as I can see you watched this show a few times! LOL Love it, Marilyn, and actually, other than the cartoon version, I have really never seen a "real" one! Thanks for sharing, but leave a little humor behind for me! LOL "And, as the airplane mechanic said to his boss when being chewed out for not getting all of his work done, due to the fact he backed into an airplane propeller! , " Sorry Boss, But I got a little "Behind in my work"!" LOL Fave and Vote Gotcha! Forever, Elvis
