Drawing - Prismacolor Pencil Drawing
Description
This recent hand drawn artwork piece was done with Prismacolor pencils portraying a male American Kestral perched in a palm tree, clutching his recent lucky catch -- a small lizard.
Every spring a family of American Kestral, formerly called sparrow hawks, nest in a neighboring palm tree here in the desert Southwest in Arizona. I was so thrilled to be able to view their activity for an entire week before they moved on. At first we heard the feeding frenzy in the tree and then were able to glimpse the young birds perched all along the palm fronds. After they began learning to fly, they would venture from one palm tree to another and then back to home base.
I took several photos for reference for my artwork. During that process I realized the diet of the birds consisted mostly of small lizards which they managed to swallow whole! That was not a pretty sight, but all part of nature and learning how these beautiful creatures survive. The Kestral usually feed on insects, small rodents, reptiles, small mammals and also small birds. While hunting, they will hover over their prey before plunging in for the catch.
The American Kestral are usually found in open country but often are found in cities.
The male is the most colorful of the species, displaying large amounts of rusty brown feathers and bluish grey wings, while the female is a little larger with less color variation. Both have black sideburns on a white face.
