This watercolor portrayal of the Broad-billed hummingbird shows the male species resting on the orange flower of the trumpet vine or desert honeysuckle. Tubular red and orange flowers are the favorite food source for the hummingbirds. The Broad-billed can be seen in many areas of the Southwest,including Arizona, and other western states as well as into regions of Mexico. They are very visible at Boyce Thompson Arboretum near Globe, Arizona where I have photographed them. I once read that the iridescent feathers on hummingbirds seem to change colors with different light sources, like wearing a sequined dress. I thought that was a perfect description.
