This is a section of the original watercolor painting, "Remnants of the Ancient Ones", by Marilyn Smith depicting what remains today of the Anasazi people, or "The Ancient Ones" as named by the Navajo Indians. Handmade pottery and shards can be found around protected sites or monuments of the civilization that mysteriously vanished many centuries ago.
The Southwest area known as the Four Corner Region consists of the states of Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico. This area seems to have the largest conglomeration of these fascinating cliff dwellings. The stone houses are tucked into caves or crevices in canyon walls where they have remained protected for centuries. The massive stone houses were built using rocks and soil at hand. Some dwellings contained as many as 800 rooms.
The Anasazi people survived by building near rivers and being able to raise some crops such as corn and other grains. No one knows where the people disappeared to or why they vanished in the 1300's....
