This photo of the Cardon cactus blooms was taken in the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, Arizona where several of these large beauties reside. They are one of the largest cacti along with the saguaro, which they are often mistaken for because of the similarity of the flowers.
From March until the end of June, brilliant flowers appear all over the Cardon Cactus. They are mainly seen on the southern side on the tips of the most upper stems. These unique flowers open late in the afternoon through the night and close in the morning.
Nectar-feeding bats are responsible for nightly pollination. The flowers are bell-shaped and white with a thick pollen coating around the rim. As the bats feed on this desirable source, they move from flower to flower and plant to plant to handle all of the cross-pollination.

Thank you for stopping by my gallery! I have been residing in Chandler, Arizona for many years and had the honor of exhibiting in galleries in Arizona and Wisconsin. Having lived in both states, it has given me very diverse subject matter as is evident in the variety of art pieces I have posted here. Southwest and Western art have become my favorite subject choices and I do offer many paintings in that collection here.
