Description
Watercolor painting by Marilyn Smith
Wood ducks are a fascinating species with all their glorious colors,
especially the male plumage.
The male's rainbow of courtship colors, along with his glossy, sleek crest
are very distinctive among the woodland duck families.
The female has a shorter crest and large, teardrop-shaped white eye patch
which helps to identify her from other species.
The juvenile resembles the female, but is more spotted below.
These ducks are quite common in open woodlands
near ponds, lakes or rivers.
They build their nests in tree cavities or nest boxes.
These ducks are equipped with sharp claws, which enables
them to perch on branches and stumps.
This painting was a special piece for someone that
appreciates nature and wildlife as much as I do.
