Description
This Southwest watercolor image by Marilyn Smith was painted from memory after another trip through the high desert red rock country of New Mexico and Arizona. As you drive along Highway 40, you will be rewarded with several views such as this one of cattle ranches tucked away next to a magnificent red cliff. It seems the owner's driveway goes on forever and sometimes it disappears over a knoll and you have to wonder if it ever finds its way to the ranch! The soil in this area is as red as the surrounding cliffs and mountains and is a beautiful sight to see. A few wildflowers pop up along fence rows as you travel the highway as well as many small, green trees no larger than bushes. Lots of cattle and horses are usually wandering in the sparse vegetation of the fields. My hope for this painting was to show the massive contrast between the towering red rocks, the nearly invisible buildings of the ranch, plus the intense sunshine on the red desert floor.

I am the proud owner from Bloomington, IL who purchased three large pieces..the tryptich, the cactus collage and the red rock ranch....recently! We are furnishing our winter home in Scottsdale and we LOVE your work, Marilyn! I have been looking at fineartamerica.com for a year and every time I look, I "land" on your site! We have a few more "spots" and I will most likely be ordering another two or three pieces! Keep painting!!!
